This exciting role will be accommodated within the soon to be launched School of Engineering and the Built Environment (EBE).
The successful applicant will lead the subject of teach Civil Engineering within the new school EBE having responsibility for the portfolio of modules across undergraduate, postgraduate, Apprenticeship and Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ’s) in this subject areas. You will also be expected to teach modules such as: Fundamentals of Civil Engineering, Mechanics of Materials, Structural Design & Analysis, Structural Engineering ; Building Surveying, Land Surveying, Construction Materials & Technology; Construction Management; Geotechnical & Soils Engineering; Infrastructure Engineering; Professional Engineering Practice; Civil Engineering major project.
The opportunity to develop new programmes related to this subject areas such as construction project management may exist in the future aligned to the needs of industry as student demand.
The delivery of these modules are underpinned by a significant investment in the latest laboratory equipment.
The successful applicant will teach and support students by adopting a learner-centred approach, delivering a first-class student experience. Undertaking research, professional practice and enterprise activity as outlined within the BNU Academic Framework. The successful applicant will be a team-player and contribute to the wider work of the new School and University

Job Title: Senior Lecturer and Subject Lead for Civil Engineering
School/Directorate: School of Engineering and the Built Environment
Grade: H
Location: High Wycombe with travel to Aylesbury campus as required
Responsible to: Head of School for Engineering and the Built Environment
Job Purpose:
- To provide subject area leadership in Civil Engineering within the newly created School of Engineering and the Built Environment.
- To design, develop new Civil Engineering courses aligned to the needs of industry including; Higher Technical Qualifications, Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees, Apprenticeships and CPD courses.
- To teach and support students by adopting a learner-centred approach, delivering a first-class student experience.
- To lead and undertake curriculum development, professional practice, enterprise activity, research and other forms of scholarly activity as outlined within the BNU Academic Framework
- To be a team-player and contribute to the wider work of the School and wider University.
Main Duties & Responsibilities of the role:
Education:
- To undertake research-informed teaching in the subject discipline managing all aspects of curriculum delivery and the associated student experience to the highest standards in accordance with the University’s requirements and the TEF.
- To undertake associated activities in connection with the courses taught including module and course leadership; curriculum development; personal tutoring student recruitment; assessment, review and evaluation.
- To achieve good student satisfaction – demonstrating ‘customer focus’ and achieving strong NSS results.
- Demonstrate inclusive practice in curriculum design and delivery. Work to eliminate attainment gaps.
- To contribute to Open Days, school, college and partnership links and the marketing and promotional work of the Department and School.
- To support students in supervising placements, learning in practice, internships and work-related activities.
- To deliver pastoral care to, and project supervision of, students.
- To plan and deliver the curriculum using appropriate digital technologies, including the use of IT and multimedia.
- To provide effective feedback, support and guidance to students, which promotes improvement of performance.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of your practice; use data and student feedback to identify opportunities to enhance the quality of your teaching and the outcomes for learners. Proactively work with colleagues in the School and across the University to share good practice, seek opportunities to enhance practice, and thereby demonstrably enhance the student experience and outcomes
- To undertake and promote cross disciplinary teaching to contribute to the success of the wider University.
- To engage in professional development activities (e.g. CPD, attendance at conferences) relating to teaching, learning and assessment.
Research and Professional Practice:
- To conduct research and scholarly activity of relevance to the senior lecturing role and/or area of professional practice and align own research with teaching and learning.
- To contribute to the REF and KEF and to internal and external research and enterprise strategies, as applicable.
- To engage with relevant business and professional networks to promote teaching and learning and research in a professional context.
- To engage in professional development activities (e.g. CPD, attendance at conferences) relating to research, enterprise and/or the relevant profession.
- To maintain an external profile within own academic subject area at a level appropriate to the discipline.
- To maintain and foster the high reputation of the University in practice partner settings.
Leadership and Management:
- To manage and lead on initiatives/areas of work which facilitate School and/or University performance.
- Demonstrate involvement in the support and development of Lecturers and Graduate Teaching Associates, contributing to the recruitment and mentoring of new colleagues, as appropriate.
- To promote the University values within the academic community.

Liaison and Networking:
- Participate in relevant internal and external networks
- Promote and market the work of the University in the subject area.
