The Role
As a Student Support Mentor within Business/Childcare and Education department, you’ll play a vital role in helping learners stay engaged, confident, and on track to achieve their goals. Working closely with teaching teams, you’ll identify student needs, plan and deliver targeted interventions, and provide one‑to‑one or small‑group support to those facing academic or wellbeing challenges. You’ll prioritise high‑needs learners, contribute to At‑Risk meetings, maintain accurate records of interventions, and collaborate with ALS colleagues to ensure support is timely, effective, and aligned with departmental expectations. Your work will help students build independence, develop strong study skills, and overcome barriers so they can succeed throughout the academic year.
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with Curriculum teams to help identify student needs, contributing to the planning and delivery of strategies, coaching, and interventions that support student engagement, wellbeing, and academic achievement.
- Plan and deliver targeted interventions, drawing on specialist vocational knowledge from teaching staff where appropriate.
- Prioritise support for High Needs learners, ensuring timely and effective intervention when required.
- Engage in regular training and CPD provided by the ALS Department to maintain and develop the skills needed for the role.
- Attend At‑Risk meetings and other departmental forums, offering updates on student progress and the impact of support strategies.
- Collaborate with departmental colleagues to ensure attendance, retention, and achievement data for learners with Additional Support Needs is monitored accurately and on time.
- Work in partnership with the ALS Department to identify emerging support needs and prioritise provision in line with the ALS Deployment Pyramid.
- Record all interventions and outcomes using college systems, ensuring accurate, consistent, and timely documentation.
- Track the intent, implementation, and impact of interventions through Digital Learning Logs and One Page Profiles.
- Support the collection of evidence for exam access arrangements, including establishing and recording students’ Normal Ways of Working.
- Liaise with teaching staff to ensure that support aligns with college policies and delivers the best possible experience for learners.
- Encourage students to develop independent learning habits and effective study skills.
- Contribute to the implementation of quality procedures within Additional Learning Support to maintain high standards across the service.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
An appropriate Level 2 qualification (or equivalent) in supporting students with learning difficulties/care, or a commitment to achieving this within an agreed timescale.
Grade 4/C or above in Maths and English or equivalent.
A willingness to undertake any mandatory training relevant to the role.
Risk Assessment qualification – Desirable.
First Aid qualification – Desirable.
Understanding of health and safety matters.
Knowledge of risk assessment processes.
Ability to work both collaboratively as part of a team and independently when required.
Proven ability to communicate effectively with staff and students at all levels.
