Overview
Hull College is a vibrant, inclusive further education provider based in Hull, serving a diverse urban population across the city and the wider East Yorkshire region. The College delivers a broad curriculum from entry level to higher education across vocational, academic, and apprenticeship pathways, supporting around 8,000 learners with about 500 staff and a turnover of £30 million. It has Ofsted:
Good with Outstanding features (October 2023) and an Outstanding financial health grade.
Governors will help shape the College's strategic direction, monitor performance, champion the College, and contribute to long-term financial resilience and sector leadership in areas such as AI, sustainability, and technical education.
Responsibilities
Governors act as a critical friend by providing robust challenge, strategic oversight, and constructive support to senior leaders. Specific duties include:
- Overseeing delivery of the Strategic Plan and monitoring key performance indicators.
- Engaging in strategic decision-making to support development and the College’s national profile.
- Leading and contributing to committee work, ensuring accountability and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Representing the College with external partners and stakeholders to build regional impact.
New governors receive a structured induction, an appointment letter and key documents, and participate in early meetings with the Chair and Director of Governance. Induction includes mandatory training in safeguarding, GDPR, and finance, with ongoing development opportunities and regular progress checks during the first year.
Role Requirements
The Corporation Board is seeking three new governors with experience in governance, leadership, and strategic oversight. Vacancies include:
- Higher Education Advisory Committee Member – knowledge of Higher Education regulation and governance (OFSted/OfS, QAA, etc.).
- Chair of the Standards Committee – experience in curriculum quality, student outcomes, data scrutiny, and Ofsted frameworks.
- Vice-Chair of the Corporation – senior leadership with governance experience, capable of leading Remuneration and ensuring leadership continuity.
All roles require the ability to challenge constructively, provide strategic oversight, and support executives in achieving College objectives.
Time Commitment & Meetings
On average, governors contribute about two days per month, including meetings, preparation, committee work, and on-site visits. The Corporation Board meets five times per academic year, with one strategic away day and one SAR validation day. Committees meet 3–5 times annually. Meetings are typically on Tuesdays or Thursdays
-person meetings are held at Hull College (Wilberforce Drive, Hull, HU1 3DG
) with hybrid options via Microsoft Teams; some committee meetings are remote.
New governors are supported to build familiarity with the college, including facility tours, staff and student engagement, and buddy/system link roles (e.g., safeguarding or finance).
