Job Purpose
To provide academic leadership and support within Oral Surgery. The appointee will play a role in the delivery of undergraduate teaching in Oral Surgery and in Human Factors. The post-holder will be expected to participate, when possible, to support the management of the Section of Clinical Dentistry, and to take leadership roles as required. Applicants will be expected to perform the clinical duties of an Honorary Consultant in Oral Surgery.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To provide of a range of teaching, assessment and feedback activities within the specialty of Oral Surgery and develop and deliver teaching in Human Factors, in an environment that promotes scholarly learning for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, in accordance with the teaching objectives of the Dental School. This may include delivery of seminars, lectures, clinical and pre-clinical teaching. On average, there are 90 undergraduate students per year.
2. To be responsible for developing creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, ensuring that the quality of educational opportunities available to undergraduate and postgraduate taught students is continually enhanced.
3. To participate in the ongoing development and review of undergraduate curricula and PGT programmes.
4. To supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects when practicable.
5. To provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
6. To engage in research or scholarship relevant to delivery of dental education and to disseminate outcomes appropriately.
7. To contribute to the management of the Section of Clinical Dentistry.
8. To undertake administrative duties associated with the delivery of teaching and the academic management of the Dental School and wider School of Medicine, as determined by the Head of Section, Director of Dental Education and Head of the Dental School
9. To undertake clinical duties as an Honorary Consultant in Oral Surgery, as agreed in annual joint University/ NHS job planning. These are outlined below.
The post holder would generally be expected to take annual leave out with term-time.
The job description will be subject to review on an annual basis as a result of joint appraisal. It is envisaged that commitments will be annualised throughout the year to reflect academic and clinical commitments.
Main NHS Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:
1. The post-holder will contribute to all aspects of the clinical activity of the Department of Oral Surgery.
2. When practicable the post holder may perform duties at various locations including General Anaesthetic lists at local and regional hospitals within NHS GGC.
3. The post holder may be asked to contribute to the patient referral vetting process.
4. There is no out-of-hours on call commitment, however there is a duty consultant service during working hours. The post holder will contribute to this rota.
5. The post-holder will contribute to and support the active clinical governance programme of quality improvement projects, clinical audit, protocol development and supervision of staff in training and specialty dentists undertaking such projects. This also includes working within the clinical policy framework of NHS GGC.
6. The post-holder will manage the clinical administration related to service delivery utilising existing administrative support and systems and engaging with the active development of modern processes for the service under the NHS GGC Digital Strategy.
7. The post-holder will co-operate with the existing consultant team with regards to planned leave in order to ensure continuity and delivery of the expected clinical service and teaching level across the year, annualised where necessary.
8. The post-holder will integrate with colleagues as a team to deliver the clinical service and report to the Oral Surgery Clinical Lead on clinical matters.
9. The post-holder will be involved in training junior staff including foundation trainees and specialist trainees (both NHS and academic) mainly in Oral Surgery but on occasion may include specialties with whom we have a close working relationship for patient management e.g. Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, Paediatrics, Restorative Dentistry and Special Care Dentistry.
10. There is an expectation that the individual will work together with NHS and University staff to facilitate and take part in clinical trials as opportunities arise.

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Registrable qualification with the General Dental Council and must be fully registered at the time of post commencement.
A2 Eligible for inclusion on the GDC Specialist List in Oral Surgery and must be included on the specialist list by the time of post commencement.
A3 Successful completion of an SAC approved training program in Oral Surgery or equivalent.
A4 Hold, working towards, or be willing to work towards a certificate in Academic Practice, or equivalent learning and teaching qualification.
A5 Hold a relevant qualification in Human Factors.
A6 Hold a Masters degree/higher research degree or equivalent.
Desirable:
B1 Fellowship in Dental Surgery or MFDS from one of the Royal Surgical Colleges, or equivalent.

Terms and Conditions
An honorary consultant contract will be applied for from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, with an associated salary from £111,430 – £148,064 per annum on the New Consultant Contract (NCC) Scotland. Further payments may be made by the NHS for clinical activity e.g. a clinical EPA, Discretionary Points, Merit Award and/or Availability Supplement, if eligible.
This post is full time (40 hours per week) and open ended.
