Position: (Senior) Lecturer in Secondary Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

The School of Social Work, Education and Teacher Education (SWETE) is home to a vibrant Initial Teacher Education (ITE) department, delivering high‑quality provision across the Primary, Secondary, and Further Education and Skills phases. Within this, the Secondary ITE team offers a dynamic and research‑informed portfolio of courses, preparing subject specialists to become reflective, resilient, and impactful teachers.
Role OverviewWe are seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Secondary Initial Teacher Education, specialising in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), to contribute to the delivery and ongoing development of our Secondary ITE provision. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work with trainees across a range of routes, supporting them to develop strong subject knowledge, pedagogical expertise, and inclusive classroom practice. The ability to offer more than one language (e.g. French, Spanish, or German) will be an advantage, as will a background or interest in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to support our commitment to inclusive education.
Responsibilities
- Plan and teach MFL within the ITE curriculum, ensuring sessions are engaging, research‑informed, and closely aligned with current school practice.
- Undertake regular school check‑ins with mentors and trainees, including site visits to support the quality assurance of school‑based training and trainee assessment, working closely with school‑based mentors to ensure high‑quality training experiences and consistent progress.
- Contribute to the design, review, and enhancement of ITE programmes, ensuring courses remain innovative, coherent, and responsive to national priorities and partnership needs.
- Provide pastoral and academic support to trainees, monitoring their progress and wellbeing, and intervening effectively when additional support is required.
- Engage with Research, Enterprise and Knowledge Mobilisation (REKM) activity, contributing to scholarly work, professional dialogue, and the dissemination of best practice.
- Support recruitment through interviewing and selection processes, and contribute to wider academic module delivery across the Secondary ITE provision.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Strong subject expertise in Modern Foreign Languages.
- Recent and relevant experience in secondary education.
- Clear commitment to high‑quality teacher education.
- Experience in higher education ITE or as an experienced school practitioner looking to transition into a university‑based role while maintaining strong links with practice.
- Ability to teach multiple MFL languages (e.g. French, Spanish, German) an advantage.
- Background or interest in SEND to support inclusive education.
- Commitment to achieving a PhD or EdD and Fellowship of the HEA within a suitable timeframe if not already achieved.
Working Arrangements
We are committed to supporting flexible methods of working wherever possible. This role is flexible and connected (Academic & Student Facing). Campus attendance will vary on a day‑to‑day basis and across the year but must purposefully align to the service being delivered and to the needs of our students, staff, and stakeholders. It is expected that the majority of your working time will be spent on campus.
Salary
& Application
£38,784 to £56,536 per annum.
