The Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity to join our Workplace Resources team at a time of continued growth for the business, both in the UK and internationally. This apprenticeship offers hands-on exposure to the day-to-day operation of a modern, dynamic office environment and is ideal for someone eager to begin a career in Facilities and Workplace Management.
As a Workplace Resources Apprentice, you will support the smooth running of our London office by helping to create a safe, welcoming, efficient, and well-managed workplace for colleagues, visitors, and vendors. You will gain experience across a wide range of workplace functions, including facilities operations, health and safety, events, logistics, access control, and reception services.
You will be part of a close-knit, friendly, and collaborative team who will support your learning and development throughout your apprenticeship (exact level and details to be confirmed). Over time, you will build a broad and practical skillset, gaining insight into both front-of-house and back-of-house workplace operations, preparing you for a future career within Facilities Management or Workplace Services.
What you’ll be doing:
You will work closely with the Workplace Resources team to support the effective day-to-day management of our London office and wider workplace services. As part of our dynamic London Workplace Team, you will learn, assist, and provide support across a range of workplace activities, contributing to the delivery of an exceptional workplace experience for all employees.
Reporting to the Head of Workplace – International and the London Workplace Experience Manager, you will be a hard-working, reliable, and conscientious individual with a positive, can-do attitude. You will be willing to support the wider workplace team with a variety of requirements while consistently delivering high levels of customer service to Markel employees.
This role works collaboratively with the London Workplace Team and wider operational teams to ensure the smooth running of the office and a welcoming, well-managed workplace environment.
As this is a full-time, office-based role, you will be required to attend the London office Monday to Friday, excluding holidays and approved absences. Working hours will be covered through a rolling shift pattern between 8:00am and 6:00pm, shared with other members of the workplace team. The shifts will alternate bi-weekly between 8am-4pm and 10am-6pm, with a 1 hour lunch break.
Your responsibilities will include learning, assisting, and supporting across the following areas:
Workplace & Facilities Support
• Assist in delivering an exceptional workplace experience for all employees and visitors.
• Support the day-to-day management of the London office, ensuring spaces are well-maintained, safe, and fit for purpose.
• Carry out regular daily floor walks, identifying issues and generating action items or task lists for resolution.
• Assist with furniture reconfigurations for meetings and events, including lifting and moving furniture when required with appropriate guidance.
• Support waste management and recycling initiatives across the office.
• Order, stock, and maintain stationery and workplace supplies.
• Actively monitor the workplace for Health & Safety concerns (e.g. slips, trips, hazards) and escalate issues where necessary.
• Support fire safety procedures and undertake fire warden duties as required (training provided).
Events, Logistics & Operations
• Assist with the setup and breakdown of internal company events, ensuring rooms and furniture are appropriately staged.
• Provide logistical support to the Workplace Hub, including mail and courier deliveries and collections.
• Support loading bay bookings and manage vendor access in line with office procedures.
• Collaborate with the workplace projects team on office moves, extensions, refurbishments, and amendments.
Systems, Security & Technology Support
• Assist in maintaining the office access control system, including issuing and managing access cards.
• Support the team in ensuring the office remains a safe and secure environment for all colleagues.
• Assist with resolving workplace-related issues raised through the ServiceNow ticketing system, working alongside IT, VC, and Workplace teams.
• Escalate workplace issues to the wider team when appropriate, ensuring timely resolution.
Reception & Front-of-House Support
As part of the apprenticeship, you will receive basic training in reception and front-of-house duties and will learn all aspects of workplace roles, including covering reception when required. Key duties you will learn and support include:
• Welcoming and greeting visitors in a professional and friendly manner.
• Managing visitor sign-in processes and issuing visitor passes.
• Ensuring guests have the correct access and are directed to the appropriate colleague or department.
• Answering and directing incoming calls and handling general reception enquiries.
• Managing meeting room bookings and ensuring rooms are prepared for use.
• Maintaining a tidy, presentable reception and front-of-house area at all times.
• Providing administrative support related to reception and office operations as required.
Learning & Development
• Gain exposure to the core principles of facilities and real estate management.
• Learn how workplace services support business productivity, wellbeing, and culture.
• Follow clear instructions and objectives, adopting and improving processes as you develop in the role.
• Stay up to date with workplace trends, best practices, and future ways of working through team discussions and forums.
• Support ad-hoc and changing tasks to meet the needs of a dynamic and evolving business environment.
