About the Role:
Faculty of Science
School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physics
Research Associate
Ref: RA2367 Salary on appointment will be £31,236 per annum, with an annual increment up to £37,694 per annum.
Join an ambitious research project at the intersection of quantum physics, condensed matter and holography. The "Holographic Quantum Fluids" project, funded by the EPSRC and conducted in collaboration with the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and the European Laboratory for Non-Linear Spectroscopy (LENS, Florence, Italy), aims to explore new theoretical frontiers in the physics of strongly interacting quantum systems.
This project seeks to bridge two distinct realms of modern physics: the AdS/CFT holographic duality (originally developed within string theory, quantum field theory, and general relativity) and the complex world of quantum fluids and condensed matter. The ultimate goal is to develop novel models describing the behaviour of strongly correlated quantum fluids at finite temperature, where comprehensive first-principles theories are still lacking.
As a Research Associate in Dr Davide Proment’s group at the University of East Anglia, you will join a team specialising in theoretical and numerical modelling of out-of-equilibrium quantum fluids. Working closely with Dr Davide Proment (Principal Investigator) and Dr Alberto Villois (Senior Research Associate), you will contribute either to:
- Theoretical investigations (ideal for candidates with a background in physics), or
- Numerical algorithm development and high-performance computing (ideal for candidates with a computer science or computational physics background).
You will also have the opportunity to collaborate closely with leading international researchers, including Prof. Carlo Ewerz and Prof. Thomas Gasenzer (University of Heidelberg) and Dr Giacomo Roati (LENS, Florence). Research visits to these partner institutions are encouraged and supported.
This is a unique opportunity to work at the frontier of quantum field theory, holography, and condensed matter physics, contributing to a rapidly developing field that connects fundamental theory with emergent quantum phenomena.
This full-time post is available on a fixed term contract for up to one year, with a desired start date in February 2026. Interviews are expected to take place in mid-January 2026.
