Role Overview
We are seeking a passionate and experienced (Trainee) Bricklaying Tutor to deliver high-quality vocational training within a secure prison environment. This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference, supporting learners to gain valuable practical skills and improve their employment prospects upon release.
You will deliver engaging, hands-on bricklaying lessons to small groups of learners, while also embedding employability skills, digital literacy, and literacy development into your sessions. A key part of the role will include ensuring the safe and secure management of all tools and equipment in line with strict prison safety protocols.
This position is ideal for a skilled bricklaying professional who is passionate about teaching, inspiring others, and supporting learners with diverse and often challenging needs.
Key Responsibilities- Deliver engaging and practical bricklaying lessons, tailored to meet the diverse needs of learners.
- Embed employability skills, workplace professionalism, teamwork, and communication throughout sessions.
- Promote digital literacy by integrating relevant technology and digital skills into training.
- Support learners in gaining industry-recognised qualifications to improve their long-term employment prospects.
- Carry out strict daily checks of all tools, materials, and equipment, maintaining accurate records.
- Ensure full compliance with prison security and health and safety policies.
- Instruct learners on the safe and correct use of all tools and machinery.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of learners with different skill levels, learning styles, and neurodiverse needs.
- Promote literacy improvement within vocational sessions, particularly for learners with low reading skills.
- Encourage an inclusive and respectful classroom environment through restorative practices.
- Track and record learner progress, providing constructive feedback to help them achieve their goals.
- Prepare learners for exams and assessments, ensuring all documentation and reasonable adjustments are in place.
- Set clear targets and expectations to support successful course completion.
- Work closely with other tutors, prison staff, and learning support teams to provide a joined-up approach to learner development.
- Complete all required administrative tasks, including attendance registers, ILPs, and reports, to a high standard.
- Support learners to complete their Employability Passport, logging key skills development and achievements.
Essential Criteria- Level 2 (or above) qualification or substantial vocational experience in bricklaying.
- Level 2 English and Maths (or willingness to work towards).
- Recognised teaching qualification such as PTLLS, AET, or CET (or willingness to achieve within probation period).
- Experience delivering practical, vocational training.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to manage tools and equipment safely and securely.
- Understanding of safeguarding, equality and diversity, and data protection policies.
Desirable Criteria
- Recognised assessing qualification (or willingness to work towards).
- Experience of working within a prison or similar secure environment.
- Knowledge of reasonable adjustments to support learners with additional needs.
- Familiarity with the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
- Experience using initial assessment and diagnostic tools such as BKSB.
- Passion for promoting reading and literacy improvement alongside vocational skills.
