About the role:
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Careers Advisor / SEMH Independent Living Support Worker to join our team in Harrogate from September 2026.
This is a rewarding, part-time opportunity supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs within an alternative provision setting. The role focuses on preparing learners for adulthood by developing their career pathways, employability skills, and independent living abilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver careers advice and guidance to young people (typically aged 11–18)
- Support students with post-16 pathways, including college, apprenticeships, and employment
- Provide practical independent living skills support (e.g. budgeting, travel training, life skills)
- Assist with CV writing, job applications, and interview preparation
- Deliver 1:1 and small group sessions tailored to individual needs
- Support students with SEMH needs, building confidence and resilience
- Contribute to EHCP outcomes and transition planning
- Develop partnerships with local employers, training providers, and colleges
- Work collaboratively with staff, families, and external agencies
Pre-requisites:
We are looking for someone who:
- Has experience in careers guidance, youth work, education, or support roles
- Understands the needs of young people with SEMH and additional barriers
- Is confident, patient, and able to build trusting relationships
- Has strong communication, organisation, and motivational skills
- Is flexible and able to adapt to individual learner needs
Desirable:
- Level 4 Careers Guidance qualification (or willingness to work towards)
- Experience in alternative provision or SEND settings
- Knowledge of local Harrogate / North Yorkshire education and employment pathways
