You must have a degree in a relevant area and have some experience working with children.
Main Purpose of Job
To work under the guidance of the class teacher to support teaching and learning in the classroom.
To provide general support to the class teacher in the management and organisation of the pupils and the classroom.
To assist the teacher in creating and maintaining a purposeful, orderly and supportive learning environment.
To promote the inclusion of all pupils, ensuring they have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school.
Main Responsibilities Support for the Pupils / Families
- Deliver both whole class and targeted academic support
- Support pupils to build resilience through a focus on developing SEMH and fostering excellent learning behaviours
- Understand the barriers which can disadvantage some children and have the insight and drive to overcome them
- Understand the individual needs of children and be responsible for supporting the healthy development of the whole child
- Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the classroom
- Encourage pupils to interact and work cooperatively with others and engage in all activities
- Read with individual children and groups and complete reading records as directed by the class teacher
- Work with small groups of children and take responsibility for their learning
- Support children with disabilities or special educational needs
- Support children in mixed attainment groupings, ensuring they understand tasks and learning objectives through adaptive teaching
Support for the Teachers
- Work with the teacher under an agreed system of supervision to develop lessons and the classroom environment
- Assess, provide feedback and record the achievements and progress of pupils through agreed monitoring systems
- Establish and maintain constructive relationships with parents/carers
- Support the parental role in pupils' learning
- Provide constructive feedback on pupils' progress and achievements to parents
- Facilitate parental support for their child's attendance
- Support home school community links
- Be proactive in managing behaviour and promote self control, independence and integration
- Support pupil transitions
- Avoid teachers and classes on educational visits
- Complete administration tasks and prepare working walls with the class teacher
Support for the School
- Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to safeguarding and child protection, health and safety, security and confidentiality, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
- Contribute to the overall ethos, work and aims of the school
- Contribute to appropriate out of school learning activities which may consolidate and extend work carried out in class
- Attend and participate in regular meetings, training and other activities as required
- Assist in the general care and maintenance of the school environment
- Assist with children at the beginning and end of the day and in the playground as required
- Support the appraisal system for support staff
- Facilitate learning during short periods of teacher absence for planned meetings under supervision
Support for the Curriculum
- Deliver learning and teaching activities under supervision and adjust these when necessary
- Use knowledge organisers to pre tutor key children
- Use and prepare specialist equipment, plans and resources necessary to support learning activities, taking into account pupils' interests, language and cultural backgrounds
- Assist with the development of English, Maths and ICT skills and support their use in learning activities
- Undertake broadly similar duties commensurate with the level of the post, as required by the school
