About The College
Northumberland College is Ofsted Outstanding and is currently building a multi-million, state of the art, new college campus in Ashington, due to open in 2026. The successful candidate will be based at the new college where a purpose-built construction, housing, advanced manufacturing and engineering centre will be located.
Curriculum spans technical, vocational further and higher education and includes large apprenticeship provision and dedicated centres for young people with SEND.
The College has two main campuses in Ashington, and Ponteland, and as part of the college group Education Partnership Northeast, it also has a significant number of satellite delivery centres across the region
Served by easy road links, and the new train station in Ashington, when Northumberland College opens its new Department for Education backed campus at Wansbeck Business Park, the college will boast a national trailblazer both in architectural design and operation. This major £52 million+ investment comes on top of the College recently driving £14million into new facilities and resources at its existing sites.

Taking Teaching Further & Additional Incentives

About The Candidate
You are calm, consistent and able to build trust quickly with young people who may have had poor experiences of education. You listen well, act with integrity and stay solution focused when situations are challenging. You believe in inclusion and hold high expectations for every learner, regardless of their starting point. You work well with others, communicate clearly and take responsibility for your impact. You are motivated by helping learners feel that they belong and can succeed.
How will this person be a Changemaker?
You will remove barriers that stop learners from engaging, helping them rebuild confidence, improve attendance and take part in learning. You will influence practice across teams by modelling effective SEMH support and strengthening the link between home and college. Your work will directly improve outcomes for learners who are most at risk of disengagement.
About The Role
This role sits within the 'Connect2' SEMH hub at Ashington and focuses on supporting learners to successfully transition into college and sustain participation. You will act as a key link between home and college, ensuring consistent communication and early intervention. This is a strong opportunity to shape inclusive practice, work closely with teaching staff and develop expertise in SEMH, trauma informed approaches and learner engagement. You will gain experience working across curriculum areas, using data systems to track impact and contributing to multi agency working.
Role Responsibilities
Provide one to one and small group support to improve learner engagement, attendance and behaviourBuild effective relationships with learners, families and staff to support transition and belongingIdentify barriers to participation and implement targeted support strategiesMonitor attendance, punctuality and engagement, taking early action where concerns ariseWork with teaching staff to adapt approaches that support access to learningRecord interventions, track progress and contribute to reviews and meetings
Qualifications
Level 2 English and Maths or equivalentRelevant qualification in youth work, education, health and social care or similar
Essential Skills And Experience
Experience working with young people with SEMH needsStrong communication and relationship building skillsAbility to manage challenging behaviour in a calm and consistent wayExperience of working as part of a multi disciplinary teamAbility to plan, deliver and review targeted supportGood organisational skills and accurate record keeping
Desirable Skills And Experience
Knowledge of trauma informed or restorative approachesExperience working in an education or FE settingUnderstanding of safeguarding and SEND processesExperience supporting learners with EHCPs
