ACCOMMODATION: Provided whilst travelling, and possibly in London for the right candidate
HOLIDAY: 21 days during the initial contract.
A skilled, experienced teacher is required to provide a California curriculum based, full-time homeschooled education for a ten year old boy and an eight year old girl whilst living in London and travelling around Europe. The American family plan to spend from August to December 2026 living in Notting Hill and travelling for long weekends and holidays to various locations in Europe. The tutor will be expected to tutor the children in London and also travel with the family, taking advantage of the changing location and amazing opportunities to deliver an outstanding academic and developmental experience. The children's school's standards and programme of study should be maintained to allow for a straightforward transition back to school the following year. The tutor should be keen to participate in the adventure and in doing so, inspire the children. There is the further opportunity for the right candidate to join the family early in Lake Tahoe, California for the summer and possibly continue with the family after December 2026, if mutually convenient.
STUDENTS Both of the students enjoy learning and are responsive to academic opportunities. They are happy in school, but are both looking forward to this experience.
The elder student is a bright, inquisitive ten year old boy. He has been educated at school in California so far, and he will be returning to his school after their European adventure. He is a good student and enjoys learning. He is an avid reader and writer, and the tutor should be happy to expand his literary horizons. Whilst his strengths are in Maths and Science, he also enjoys being out learning in the real world on field trips and suchlike.
The younger student is an equally bright, eight year old girl, who has similarly attended school in California so far. She learns more toward the creative and artistic talents, whilst also enjoying Maths and, like her brother, robotics. She is a good reader, but can be prone to losing focus. The ideal candidate will be skilled at developing executive function and may be experienced with students experiencing mild ADHD.
Both students will thrive in a supportive, compassionate learning environment, studying with a teacher who is patient, happy to coach them to solutions and makes learning fun.
The students come from a very supportive and engaged family, with parents who are actively involved in their development and who want to give their children a meaningful 'whole child' learning experience during their adventures.
JOB DESCRIPTION The teacher will have suitable experience and expertise teaching students of the appropriate age level and will be comfortable teaching according to the California curriculum.
They will be required to design and deliver an appropriate curriculum, taking into account the family's travels and opportunities provided thereby. The intention is that the students are provided with an inspirational learning experience as well as an effective one. The teacher should take full advantage of the situation to add breadth and depth to the education provided. They should be able to adapt their teaching style as required to provide the maximum benefit for the students in each location they experience, covering both the traditional "bookwork" as well as enhancing the curriculum. The tutor should be comfortable maintaining academic rigour when needed as well as inspiring both students on the educational pathway towards a life-long love of learning.
The role is much broader than just teaching - there is a mentoring and caring element to it as well. The tutor is expected to engage with the students during adventure and sightseeing activities, as well as in more formal lessons back in London to encourage their academic and personal development. As part of this, the tutor should devise project based learning experiences based around the children's travels that aim to create a monthly media record of their adventures by way of films, short stories etc.
The tutor will be spending a large amount of time with the students and their family, so it is essential that they are fun to be around, easy going, communicative and adaptable. The successful applicant will appreciate the need for flexibility to make the experience as rewarding as possible for the students, whilst maintaining a good work/life balance for themselves.
The tutor should have other skills and interests to contribute beyond their mainstream teaching ability. Being comfortable with creative/expressive arts is important, being a skilled pianist or guitarist would be desirable, an interest in Tae Kwon Do or Indian dance would be advantageous. Both children enjoy exploring other languages and an ability to develop their Spanish, Korean or Gujarati would be beneficial.
The tutor will need to ensure the students continue to cover the requirements of the California curriculum whilst adding breadth and depth to their studies. The children will be taking school entrance examinations on their return to the United States and they should be appropriately prepared for these.
Full records of all teaching, learning activities and progress must be kept up to date.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable extending their working hours into the evening occasionally to enable the clients to enjoy some of the cultural experiences available in London and to support mum when needed.
The tutor must not smoke or vape.
The tutor should be comfortable signing a Non-Disclosure Agreement.
HOURS AND HOLIDAYS This is a full-time position encompassing up to 40 hours per week. The tutor will work with the students throughout the week, with a varying timetable to fit in with the family's plans and activities. Flexibility is required as one of the advantages of this approach is that the family are not constrained by school timetables etc. The tutor should be happy to travel for some extended weekends and holidays. The tutor must be able to respond to changes of plan as they arise.
The tutor will be entitled to 21 days holiday in this six month contract, to be taken at times convenient to the client.
ACCOMODATION AND TRAVEL The tutor will be provided with accommodation when travelling. Accommodation in London may be available for the appropriate candidate.
The client will pay the tutor $60 per diem for food whilst travelling.
All costs associated with travel will be covered by the client.
TERM AND FEES The placement is to start in August 2026 and will run until late December 2026.
There may be an opportunity for the appropriate candidate to start in July, at Lake Tahoe, CA. There may be further opportunity for the appropriate candidate to extend this contract through to May 2027 at the mutual convenience of all parties.
Beacon will pay the tutor $15,000 per month payable in arrears.
