The Department of Architecture & Built Environment currently works within the School of Computing, Architecture and Emerging Technologies and comprises a diverse team of individuals who thrive in a collaborative environment. We have a strong existing portfolio of architectural courses and are in the process of enhancing the courses that we offer further. We are seeking a new colleague to join the team and become part of the positive developments happening within the department.
The Role
We are looking for a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Architecture & Built Environment to join our team. This might be someone with a minimum of Part II qualification in architecture or someone registered as an Architect in the UK. This role requires the ability to plan, organise and deliver on undergraduate architecture courses, ensuring that the content is current and relevant to the context of interior architecture. The role requires an ability to utilise a range of different teaching, learning and assessment processes to ensure that students receive high-quality and constructive feedback. You will help to enhance the department's offering and work closely with other key members of the team to support the on-going successes of the department.
You will contribute to development of the department and teach across different levels of the courses within our portfolio. You will work with colleagues in the department to help shape the curriculum, lead on modules and generate partnerships with external organisations to enhance opportunities to learn with industry. The role will also require active engagement with outreach and recruitment activities.
Specific skills or qualifications
We are seeking an engaged and committed individual who will have:
- An educational background in Interior Architecture or a relevant discipline with, as a minimum, a good degree at undergraduate level and postgraduate level (Part II), obtained at a UK accredited and validated school or from an internationally validated course
- A sustained record of teaching on an Interior Architecture/ Architecture course in the UK, with strong evidence of teaching students within a design studio setting
- The ability to support students to design and deliver architectural projects
- Relevant industry experience in a relevant discipline related to the built environment, including comprehensive knowledge of current critical challenges impacting architecture and architectural education.
The main responsibilities of the post will include:
- Preparing, delivering and managing learning and teaching content that ensures the department’s continued success and development
- Working collaboratively with colleagues in the growing Department of Architecture & Built Environment, focused on ensuring a dynamic learning environment for students
- Teaching across a range of modules and year groups as required, to inspire new generations of emerging professionals, creating an inclusive environment and offering pastoral support
- Contributing toward interdisciplinary initiatives, connecting students within the department and cross disciplinary activities with other departments
- Establishing links with external professionals to generate innovative approaches to ‘Learning with Industry’
- Promoting the use of new and emerging technologies as tools to augment critical thinking for learning, teaching and assessment
- Setting spatial design agendas for students focused on relevant critical themes such as the climate emergency, ethics, fire and life safety and professionalism
- Monitoring the modules assigned to your responsibility, maintaining content, delivery, assessment and moderation processes, including progression targets in accordance with the University strategies and regulations
- Supporting the Course Team in the administration, recruitment, and promotion of courses within the Department and its agenda to offer transformative educational opportunities.
- Contributing to ensuring the integration of Professional body requirements in the curriculum of validated and prescribed courses in the Department of Architecture and Built Environment

- A keen awareness of the built environment and interior/architectural practice
- Strong design sensibilities and an ability to support students to reach their potential through design-oriented projects
- A good understanding of current architectural practice and issues impacting the built environment, more generally
- An ability and interest to acquire new skills and develop ideas in collaboration with others, including those within the team and university and external partners
- A keenness to work with others and evidence of experience of working within a Higher Education environment
- Excellent inter-personal skills and highly motivated to maintain positive communication, transparency and organisational skills to support the department
