The School of Health. Medicine and Life Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire has a long-established reputation as a center for excellence for healthcare education. We have a very large programme and have successfully delivered Independent and/or Supplementary prescribing for a number of years. Independent prescribing is offered to nurses, midwives, paramedics, pharmacists, podiatrists and therapeutic radiographers, while supplementary prescribing to dietitians and diagnostic radiographers.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the School as a Senior Lecturer in Independent and/or Supplementary Prescribing within the Primary Care Team, joining a supportive and friendly academic team. Main duties and responsibilities
You will provide high‑quality, evidence‑informed teaching in Independent and/or Supplementary Prescribing across modules, short courses, and CPD programmes to ensure students acquire the knowledge and skills required to become an independent and/or supplementary prescriber.
You will bring up‑to‑date professional knowledge and a commitment to inclusive, innovative pedagogy that supports successful outcomes for all learners. You will play a key role in maintaining academic standards, working in line with QAA and PSRB requirements, external examiner feedback, and recommendations from the University programme committee and student feedback.
You will contribute to student selection, support induction activities, act as a personal tutor, and provide effective academic and practice‑based support to students, prescribing practitioners, and practice assessors and supervisors. The role includes undertaking responsibilities such as module leadership, managing associated administration and quality assurance processes, and participating in Programme Development Teams, Examination Boards, and review panels. You will ensure service users inform curriculum design and help maintain strong partnerships with NHS and community organisations, GP practices, ICBs, and other stakeholders. You will also monitor and present teaching‑related data for reporting purposes and contribute to wider School and University activities.
Skills and experience required
You will have experience in supporting student learning in either a practice or classroom setting and of facilitating student learning in a university setting (e.g. student nurses, students on allied health professional programmes, Independent and/or Supplementary Prescribing students). You will also be expected to have experience of good innovative pedagogic practice and extensive experience of high-quality evidence of coaching or mentoring and teaching other professionals.
You will have a theoretical knowledge of Independent and/or Supplementary Prescribing, along with a thorough understanding of PRSB standards. In addition, expertise in clinical assessment, clinical reasoning, diagnostic skills and an active prescriber. The role requires the ability to work to deadlines, and to set and monitor own standards, and collaborate with a range of other disciplines. In addition to this you will be in proficient in English Language, verbal and written and have excellent interpersonal skills. You will be expected to be able to work flexibly and responsively to team and workload requirements and show a commitment to engage in scholarly activity, for personal and professional development.
Qualifications required
You will hold a Level 7 Postgraduate at Masters, or equivalent or higher in a relevant field or significant experience. You should also have live registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Health and Care Professions Council, General Pharmaceutical Council, or General Medical Council and be an independent prescriber with current experience. A teaching qualification or willingness to work towards one is also essential.
