We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Lecturer in English (Functional Skills) to join our team at Midland Metropolitan Learning Campus located in Smethwick. This exciting, full-time, permanent position offers the opportunity to inspire students to achieve their potential in English through a dynamic and engaging curriculum and will work across multiple sites.

As a Lecturer in English (Functional Skills), you will deliver high-quality teaching to students, enabling them to gain functional English skills that are essential for both academic progression and employment. You will support students in developing their literacy, reading, writing, and communication skills, helping them build confidence and thrive in their chosen fields.
You will contribute to curriculum development, assessment, and student progress tracking, while fostering an inclusive and motivating learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, deliver, and assess Functional Skills English lessons to meet the needs of learners
- Develop engaging learning materials that reflect current industry practices and student interests
- Monitor, track, and report on student progress, providing feedback and support for improvement
- Create and maintain a positive, inclusive classroom environment that supports all learners
- Use technology and resources effectively to enhance learning
- Participate in curriculum development and improvements to deliver high-quality education
- Attend meetings and professional development sessions to continuously enhance skills and knowledge
- Support students in preparing for functional skills assessments
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise – Essential
- Degree or equivalent in English or a related field
- Qualified teacher status or willingness to work towards a teaching qualification
- Proven experience in teaching Functional Skills English
- Ability to create engaging, innovative lesson plans and assessments
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently
- Willingness to work across multiple sites
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise – Desirable
- Experience working with learners in a further education setting
- Understanding of various learning and teaching strategies for diverse student needs
- Familiarity with the latest teaching technologies and resources
Teaching Qualifications & Salary Banding
To be eligible for our Qualified Lecturer salary banding (£31,837 - £48,160), you must hold one of the following teaching qualifications:

- DTTLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
- Certificate in Education
- PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
- ProfGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education)
- DET (Diploma in Education and Training)
- DiT (Diploma in Teaching) – if for a vocational subject
If you do not hold one of the above qualifications, you will fall into our Unqualified Lecturer salary banding (£26,661 - £29,998).
Not Accepted as Stand Alone Qualifications
- PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
- CTLLS (Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
- CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)
