Do you want to teach in a dynamic, highly developed ESOL Department?
An opportunity has arisen for TWO Sessional Lecturer positions on a casual basis to deliver high quality learning at all levels across Durham County. The contract is initially to cover absence and ad-hoc duties, but there may be an opportunity to expand into a more permanent role due to high ESOL demand in the County Durham Area.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
The DurhamLearn ESOL programme area delivers high-quality courses of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to a wide range of learners across County Durham. We also carefully craft courses to suit individual and employment needs, including delivery of functional skills, vocational programmes and informal leisure-based or emergency-needs provision. You will be expected to contribute to the development of your own curriculum, service KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and the progression of the ESOL team's overall vision and aims.
The post will involve extensive travel between centres across County Durham, with the possibility of online and evening working patterns. While your normal place of work will be Crook Civic Centre, you will mainly work remotely out of community centres. You will therefore need to plan carefully so that you have the resources you need to deliver in community settings. You will be able to access nearby Durham County Council offices for administration and resource printing though this may involve further travel before or after lessons (payment for excess mileage is available). The role may involve long periods of standing, manual handling, lifting, carrying and erecting of equipment.
We encourage you to contact Rachel Minto, the Programme Lead for ESOL, via email at rachel,minto@durham.gov.uk to arrange an informal discussion about the role.
WHAT WILL I NEED?
You will have knowledge of the ESOL National Curriculum from Pre-Entry to Level 2, and be able to support learners with differing needs. You will be able to deliver informal and regulated provision including ESOL, vocational qualifications and functional skills qualifications in English or maths.
A minimum Level 5 teaching qualification and minimum Level 3 in ESOL/English related qualifications is essential, as is a minimum Level 2 qualification in maths (overseas equivalences must be evidenced).
We work out of community centres across Co. Durham, sometimes in remote locations, therefore use of own transport is highly desirable.
Please refer to the attached Person Specification for the full criteria.
If successful, you will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service Enhanced Disclosure.
Our commitment to safeguarding
Durham County Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore if successful in your application, an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be sought inclusive of a check of the Children's Barred List and Adults Barred List due to the position working in regulated activity. Applicants should be aware that the DBS check will disclose both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings, in line with current legislation and will confirm whether an individual is barred from working with children, adults, or both.
