School of BiosciencesA position is available for a fixed-term maternity cover position as Lecturer in Biomedical Science on the Teaching and Scholarship career pathway to join our dedicated team of academic staff in the School of Biosciences.
The post holder will undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules/programmes in biosciences within the undergraduate and postgraduate provision within the school, supervise students and carry out administrative duties which may include student recruitment.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in a subject area or relevant industrial experience within the biomedical sciences area, teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level within the biomedical sciences area and specialist knowledge within the academic subject area biomedical diseases, encompassing one or more of the following: (i) cardiovascular, (ii) respiratory, (iii) other relevant human diseases, and (iv) physiological or genetic aspects of biomedical diseases.
This post is full-time (35 hours per week), and fixed term until 11th January 2027.
Salary: £41,064 – £46,049 per annum (Grade 6). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

Specific experience relevant to the role include expertise in biomedical diseases (cardiovascular/respiratory/other), and their physiology and genetics. Main duties and responsibilities
Teaching - Design and deliver teaching programmes for biomedical courses and contribute to module development and student assessment as part of a module team
- Inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
- Supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students
- Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust
Scholarship- Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship
- Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work
- Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community
- Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work
Other- Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile

- Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development

Essential Criteria
Qualifications and Education- Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a subject area or relevant industrial experience within the biomedical sciences area.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience- Teaching experience and qualifications at undergraduate/postgraduate level within the biomedical sciences area.
- Demonstrate specialist knowledge and current advancements within the academic subject area biomedical diseases, encompassing one or more of the following: (i) cardiovascular, (ii) respiratory, (iii) other relevant human diseases, and (iv) physiological or genetic aspects of biomedical diseases.
- Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools teaching programmes.
Pastoral, Communication and Team Working- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media
- The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.
Other- Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work and the delivery of higher education teaching
Desirable Criteria - Relevant professional qualification(s).
- Evidence of collaborations with industry and stakeholders relevant to university education.
- Proven ability to work without close supervision.
