The apprenticeship journey starts with a Level 2 in Engineering Operations. This is a general engineering apprenticeship covering Electrical, Technical Design, Fabrication, Welding, Mechanical Engineering. On average this takes 12 months months to complete. If you have already completed a Level 2 in Engineering Operations or equivalent, you will not have to repeat this.
Once you have completed the Level 2 in Engineering Operations, you can proceed with a Level 3 in this specific trade area. The length of each apprenticeship depends on your ability, the type of apprenticeship and the location you complete it in. Level 3 Trade specific apprenticeship on average takes 2 – 2.5 years.
Your time will be split between study with your training provider and time putting your skills into practice in the yard. We have dedicated college partners at each yard where you can develop your skills and to provide you with support throughout your apprenticeship.

Job Description
Reporting to: The Apprenticeship Supervisor and Manager
Job purpose: Apprentice Mechanical Fitter will learn to install, maintain and repair mechanical components, fittings and equipment to meet quality and safety standards. Working under supervision, the apprentice will develop practical skills, technical knowledge and an understanding of workplace procedures, progressing towards competence as a Mechanical Fitter.

Job Duties
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs and diagrams.
- Understand oral and written instructions.
- Work with material specifications, British Standards and supplier requirements.
- Follow regulations, rules, compliance requirements and quality systems.
- Follow workplace health & safety instructions and arrangements.
- Plan and organise tasks with guidance.
- Mark off work and prepare jobs.
- Operate basic tools and equipment (e.g., drills, grinders, measuring tools).
- Support the installation of machines and systems (engine room and deck equipment).
- Assist in setting mechanical systems to work.
- Support repair and overhaul of machinery and systems.
- Learn to flush and pressure test systems.
- Support alignment of pumps, valves and shafts.
- Assist with installing taper shafts, keyways, fitted bolts and machinery components.
- Learn to install and re-assemble main engines, jet bowls and mechanical assemblies.
Qualifications
Essential
- Hold a minimum a of GCSE grade C/4, National 5 (or Equivalent) in Mathematics and English
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to use your own initiative and a strong drive to succeed are all essential
