Stoke on Trent City Council is seeking a motivated and compassionate Independent Travel Trainer to support children, young people, and/or adults with additional needs to travel safely and confidently using public transport.
This rewarding role helps promote independence, improve life skills, and reduce reliance on specialist transport services. You will deliver structured travel training programmes tailored to individual needs, enabling participants to access education, employment, and community activities independently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess individuals’ travel training needs and develop personalised training plans
- Deliver one-to-one practical travel training in real-life settings
- Teach road safety, personal safety, route planning, and use of public transport
- Support individuals to build confidence and decision-making skills
- Conduct risk assessments and ensure safeguarding procedures are followed
- Liaise with families, carers, schools, colleges, and other professionals
- Maintain accurate records and monitor progress against agreed outcomes
- Promote equality, inclusion, and person-centred practice
About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has experience working with individuals with SEND, learning disabilities, autism, or additional needs
- Has knowledge of safeguarding and risk assessment practices
- Is patient, resilient, and confident working independently in community settings
- Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Can manage their own caseload effectively
