The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council. We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need.
We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.
We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning. In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.
Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas:
- Nursery Workers
- Teaching Assistants
- Leadership/Management; and
- Customer Care.
We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop.
Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?1 x 0.8 FTE (4 days: 9am-5pm) permanent English for Speakers of Other Languages Citywide/Peripatetic Learning Support Assistant post. Role consists of 5 hours a day in class support and the remaining hours utilised for onsite curriculum, administrative and record keeping duties.
As a learning support assistant, you will support adult learners with a disability, learning difficulties or pre-literacy needs to fully access learning in English for Speakers of Other Languages classes. Working under the direction of a tutor, you will work with small groups/individuals to enable learners to progress in their ESOL courses, learn relevant language to help them in their day to day lives as well as begin to read and write in English. After class times, you will complete various duties to support teaching and learning such as copying, resource preparation, contacting learners who have not attended and updating and evidencing Additional Learning Support and Individual Learning Plans.
Delivery takes place in community venues such as Family Hubs, libraries, schools, VCS organisations and outreach locations. Travel between delivery sites is standard. Delivery is year-round and courses therefore run in the school holidays. This is not a term time only role/position.

Who are we looking for?We are seeking a flexible and experienced person with knowledge of the diverse needs of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) adult learners and the barriers to learning they may face. We are looking for someone with a passion for improving the lives of those most in need; someone who has a positive attitude to equality of opportunity.
You will need to be adaptable to meet changing learner needs and be prepared to work in different venues across the city supporting different learners, tutors and classes. You will enjoy the variety of working from community based venues and across different areas of Coventry and be prepared to work from up to 3 different locations each day: In class support in a morning class at one venue, in class support in an afternoon class at a different venue and then out of class duties from a 3rd venue/administrative centre at the end of the working day. Experience of working with pre-literate adults would be an advantage.
