RAC Patrol Apprentice (Light Vehicle Technician)

Annual Wage:
- Year 1: £15,500.00
- Year 2: National Living Wage (age dependent)

Working Week:
Due to the roadside nature of the role, shifts follow a rotating pattern averaging 40 hours per week. Typical shifts will last around 8 hours per day, but may vary based on operational needs.

Recruitment Process:
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend the RAC Open Day, including a presentation and interview, in Bristol on Wednesday, 9th July and potentially 23rd July.
Please note that attendance is by invitation only, and invitations will be extended based on a rigorous selection process. Due to logistical and scheduling constraints, this will be the only Open Day offered.

What Will the Apprentice Be Doing?
As an apprentice, you’ll gain all the essential skills to become a fully qualified Roadside Technician, with a clear path toward career advancement. Key responsibilities include:
- Using a variety of tools and diagnostic equipment to identify and repair vehicle faults
- Learning through a blend of college-based learning and hands-on training with experienced team leaders
- Providing real-time roadside assistance, performing diagnostics and repairs
- Communicating effectively with RAC members to get them safely back on the road
Training and Qualifications:
Training is delivered both in the workplace and through seven weekly training blocks per academic year at S&B Automotive Academy in Bristol. Apprentices will be supported by:
- A dedicated workplace mentor
- An S&B development coach
- A digital eLogbook for real-time tracking and feedback
- Apprentices will undergo annual Gateway Assessments, culminating in a final End Point Assessment.
If commuting to the Academy isn’t feasible during training blocks, RAC will provide hotel accommodation at no cost to you, including breakfast and evening meals.
Qualifications upon completion:
- Level 2 Autocare Technician Apprenticeship Standard
- Functional Skills in Maths and English (if required)

Qualified Roadside Technicians can earn between £33,000 and £41,000 per year, with continued learning and development throughout your career.

Entry Requirements:
- GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths (Grade 4/C or above) – desirable

Additional requirements:
- Full, clean manual UK driving licence
- Minimum age: 18 (no upper age limit)
- Willingness to travel to S&B Academy and RAC training venues during the first 6 months (Apprentices will have travel costs reimbursed)
- Successful candidates will need to complete a full DBS check
