About
I am applying for the post of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Tutor because I am confident that my academic background, professional training, and extensive teaching experience align closely with the person specification. Over the course of my career, I have gained substantial expertise in teaching English for Academic Purposes across a range of contexts, including presessional and in-sessional courses, foundation programs, and direct support within higher education. In addition to my classroom teaching, I have developed strong skills in curriculum design, materials development, assessment, and the use of technology to support learning. I am also committed to supporting the wider student experience by contributing to academic literacy initiatives, pastoral care, and cross-departmental collaboration. Firstly, a central essential requirement for this role is a recognized qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Applied Linguistics, or an equivalent area. I hold an MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL, which provided me with both a strong theoretical grounding in language learning and acquisition and extensive practical training in teaching methodologies. This post graduate qualification enabled me to engage critically with key theories of second language acquisition, discourse analysis, academic literacy, and genre-based approaches all of which directly inform my work in EAP. In addition, I hold both an RSA CELTA and a Trinity DELTA, which equipped me with practical classroom skills, lesson planning expertise, and the ability to manage classes effectively. The combination of my academic training and professional certification ensures that I meet the essential requirement of possessing both the knowledge and the pedagogical expertise to teach English for Academic Purposes at an elevated level. Furthermore, I have engaged in ongoing professional development throughout my career, attending workshops, conferences, and training sessions related to EAP, digital learning, and assessment. This demonstrates not only that I meet the qualification requirements but also that I am committed to reflective practice and continuous improvement. Another essential criterion for this post is proven experience in teaching EAP within a higher education context. I have taught English for Academic Purposes for almost fifteen years, working across a variety of programs including: Pre-sessional courses: preparing international students for entry into undergraduate and postgraduate programs by focusing on academic writing, critical reading, seminar skills and presentation skills. In-sessional support: providing tailored workshops and tutorials to students across disciplines, helping them to develop the academic literacy required to succeed in their studies. I have also supervised international master s students in the production of their dissertations. Undergraduate International Business Communications degree courses: teaching on the Marketing modules, which involved instruction and assessment of their spoken assignments consisting of participation in group assimilated business meetings, supervision of their individual collection of primary and secondary data, and assessment of their individual final reports. Postgraduate International Business Communication and Trade degree courses: delivering guidance on the writing of all sections of dissertations. In these contexts, I have taught diverse cohorts of students with a wide range of linguistic, cultural, and disciplinary backgrounds. I have therefore developed the ability to differentiate my teaching, provide targeted support, and foster inclusive classroom environments. I have also gained extensive experience in academic writing instruction, supporting students in producing essays, reports, literature reviews, and dissertations. I am confident in teaching students how to construct coherent arguments, engage critically with sources, and adopt appropriate referencing practices. I have also supported the development of students spoken academic English, including leading seminars, delivering presentations, and engaging in academic discussions. This breadth of experience means I fully meet the essential requirement of having substantial and relevant teaching experience in EAP contexts.
