Overview
The University of Glasgow's School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Medical Genetics (Learning, Teaching & Scholarship Track). The School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing is renowned for pioneering teaching methods and superb facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate study. The School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing is part of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences.
Applications are welcome from individuals who hold a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD), or equivalent qualification, in a related discipline and possess knowledge in medical genetics and genomics related to developing teaching programmes, methodologies and learning support.
Job Purpose
To contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by contributing to teaching, assessment and administration processes associated with postgraduate medical genetics programmes and to undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching in the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing. This is a post doctoral role in Medical Genetics at the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver a range of teaching, supervision and assessment activities (including laboratory teaching, data analysis, tutorials and problem based learning) across the medical genetics MSc postgraduate programmes and, to a lesser extent, related undergraduate programmes.
- Carry out course administration and teaching related activities within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria, with timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research led and scholarly approach to the student learning and assessment in the medical genetics MSc postgraduate programmes.
- Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
- Ensure an inclusive and evidence based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem based learning to promote student participation and attainment of learning outcomes.
- Engage in scholarship by undertaking methodologically rigorous, educationally relevant enquiries into student learning and disseminate evidence to enhance your own and potentially others' teaching practices. Attend and participate in appropriate workshops, seminars and conferences to support research led teaching, scholarship and/or professional practice in medical genetics and genomics.
- Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs. Undertake student support activities including personal development planning, mentoring meetings and pastoral support.
- Develop relationships with external stakeholders in support of knowledge exchange, public understanding and appropriate forms of outreach such as widening access.
- Participate in local and potentially overseas activities associated with student recruitment (e.g. open days), orientation, induction and other School and University initiatives such as support for student transitions, employability and student mobility as appropriate.
- Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the line manager or Head of School.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Essential Knowledge/Qualifications
- Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD), or equivalent qualification, in a related discipline.
- Sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge in medical genetics and genomics related to developing teaching programmes, methodologies and learning support.
- A Distinction or high Merit from an MSc in medical genetics, or equivalent professional experience that provides expertise in the area of applying genetics knowledge in a clinical context, with high grades in all problem solving examinations.
- An in depth understanding of the molecular scientific basis of diagnostic genetic laboratory techniques.
Desirable Knowledge/Qualifications
- Track record of experience in development and delivery of effective teaching and learning support.
Essential Skills
- Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.
- Up to date knowledge and specialist understanding in the field of medical genetics with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning, and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area.

Essential Experience
- Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy.
- Experience of undertaking laboratory work including genetic techniques, applying initiative and independent judgement.

- Experience of undertaking university teaching in the field of genetics and genomics.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum. This post is full time and open ended.
