Job Description
Applications are invited from General Practitioners registered with the General Medical Council. The University of Aberdeen, in partnership with NHS Grampian, is developing a new Teaching Centre (TC) within the Health Sciences Building at Foresterhill. The Teaching Centre will provide structured, supervised clinical placements for final-year medical students in both General Practice and Mental Health, starting in September 2026. This initiative responds to a critical shortage of placement capacity caused by rising student numbers and increasing pressure on GP practices and mental health services. This innovative project allows the University to provide authentic, real consultations with patients, triaged from their own practices, for our senior years medical students and aims to complement the teaching students already receive in our teaching practices across Scotland.
Suitable patients will be voluntarily recruited on the day from practices across Aberdeen City and the Teaching Centre will provide a face-to-face consultation and appropriate management of the presenting condition. This will not be a walk in service and appointments will only be for unscheduled, on the day presentations.
The Teaching Centre operates as an educational environment in which patient-facing activity is undertaken for learning purposes under direct clinical supervision. During consultations clinicians act in a dual capacity as University educators and NHS Grampian General Practitioners, retaining full clinical responsibility for patient care within NHS Grampian governance arrangements.
The post holder will be an experienced and motivated General Practitioner with a drive to help teach and train senior years medical students in real clinical consultations. The Teaching Centre will be operational 4 days a week (closed on Wednesday) and the post will be a minimum of 0.2% FTE, maximum 0.6% FTE.
Salary will be at the maximum point on the Clinical GP salary scale of £118,647 per annum, pro rata.
Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Laura Muirhead (laura.muirhead@abdn.ac.uk) or Dr John McKeown (john.mckeown@abdn.ac.uk).
