Serco Defence delivers a wide range of support to the prestigious Skynet contract providing secure satellite communication services to the UK Government and Armed Forces. We have an exciting opportunity for an operations manager to join our team based at Bordon, Hampshire.

The role of the Satellite Ground Station (SGS) Operations Manager is a key position on the Skynet contract and reports directly to the Head of Operations. This position is responsible for the management of all 24/7 earth station operational and technical activities. This encompasses the scheduled maintenance of the site’s baseband and Radio Frequency equipment and installation and decommissioning work.

Main Responsibilities Of The Role Include
  • The 24/7 operational output of a satellite ground station.
  • Site Health and Safety representative.
  • The management of the Operations team consisting of:
  • Second Line Maintenance.
  • Mechanical & Electrical team.
  • 24/7 Operational Support team.
  • Full budget control and budget alignment with the business plan.
  • Ensuring all commercial agreements with stakeholders are maintained and that Key Performance Indicators are achieved and evidenced.
  • Ensuring all teams are properly trained and resourced to support operational requirements.
  • Ensuring statutory compliance for all operations.
  • All customer reporting requirements are met.
  • Act as site SME representative on behalf of the customer at meetings and briefings.
  • Act as the Senior Radiation Protection Supervisor for the site.
  • Performance management of all teams, ensuring performance reviews are conducted.
  • Promote business continuity and continuous development and improvement within all teams.
What You’ll Need To Do The Role
  • Proven experience of inspirational people management and team development in a highly technical field.
  • Experience of working in a customer focused environment.
  • Knowledge of digital data communications techniques and protocols.
  • Knowledge or experience in core military and commercial satellite communication networks.
  • UK Government Security Clearance (or ability to attain).
  • MS Office Tools proficient.
  • Ability to work out of the Oakhanger Ground Station the majority of the time.
  • Recognised Management training or qualification.
  • IOSH or equivalent qualification in Health and Safety.
  • Conversant with the management of Cryptographic device material.
  • Experience in dealing with non-ionising radiation sources.
