What the role involves:

The remit of the Head of Engineering is wide with ultimate responsibility for the delivery of our internal development roadmap, our digital product roadmap and our software strategy. Your impact will be felt by every member of the organisation, our customers and our learners and will work to deliver the fundamental success of the whole organisation. You will be the most senior engineer in the organisation and report to our CTO and frequently the board. Your expertise and experience will advise the organisation around all endeavours enabled by or impacting technology.

The role is full-time and hybrid with an expectation of multiple days per week within our office based in Selby (near Leeds.) The reason for this is to promote cohesion within the team, to support those team members who work frequently from the office and also to maximise communication with the wider business and its stakeholders.

About you:

You genuinely enjoy taking on large and complex projects, supporting technical and non-technical colleagues in their projects, but are more motivated by delivery than minutiae or politics. Deep, highly technical subjects do not phase you and youre a quick study when it comes to areas that are new to you. Success is impossible without great communication and your ability to listen, understand and engage are exceptional.

Responsibilities/duties:

Team. Our colleagues define our capabilities at The Skills Network and the leadership, management, motivation and support of our engineering teams is paramount to the role. Much of the software that defines our organisation is developed internally especially where our needs are different from those solved by products in the general market. To do this well it is important that we have a highly competent, well led, engineering function and culture.
Education Platform. Tens of thousands of learners across the country user our education platform to progress their education and skills. For them we are their textbooks, their college, their teachers wrapped into one. It is a highly competitive market with exciting innovations and huge opportunities we want to invest in continuing to lead the market with our technology and learning experiences. We also, like all businesses, have legacy systems which need significant but incremental re-development and must do so while remaining live.
White-label Platform. We resell our education platform for hundreds of colleges and businesses further increasing the numbers benefiting but also adding multi-tenancy complexity. For these customers our experience must be reliable, high-quality and always available.
Business Systems. The administration required to process hundreds of thousands of learners from application through to course completion is significant. Our technology supports the whole learner journey and more. From learner application processing, timetabling, auditing to course authoring, plagiarism detection and payment processing the business systems are significant, complex and utterly essential to the businesses ability to trade. Ensuring that appropriate processes are in place to enable their constant availability is paramount.
Integrations. We dont build everything ourselves; we take the systems available in the market if they make more sense. We use apprentice tools like OneFile and PIC, finance tooling like NetSuite and GoCardless and much of our BI infrastructure is built with PowerBI. We also use many other SaaS tools to power the organisation and ensuring all our systems are well integrated minimises inefficiency and allows us to get the best from those tools.
Cyber security. Unfortunately, security of data and business systems is of growing concern for all organisations. With increasing regularity and sophistication, attackers and opportunist criminals are attempting to steal customer and business critical data as well as gaining access and control of systems to use for extorsion. The Head of Engineering has substantial responsibility for the countermeasures and approaches taken to protect our systems and the customer and business data they store.
Advisory. We are a vertically integrated education organisation with a significant mix of technology needs throughout. This means there is an on-going need to provide technology advice to senior managers throughout the organisation to provide visibility of the art of the possible.
